A serving Greater Manchester Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 47-year-old is believed to have been accused of attacking a woman in a patrol car while on duty.

He had previously been suspended from duty following the allegations but has now been detained and questioned by detectives.

On Thursday night, he remained in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm we have received reports of misconduct in the workplace against a serving GMP officer, who has been suspended following these allegations.

"An investigation is underway by our professionals standards branch and a 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault as part of our enquiries.”

No other details of where he served or when the alleged crime took place were released.

It comes three months after another officer was jailed after confessing to repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl.

Farooq Ahmed, who served in the Tameside area, was locked up for two years in January after admitting assaulting a girl aged under-13 by touching, and one count of making an indecent photograph of a child between April 2016 and April 2018.

The 37-year-old’s crimes came to light when he walked into Manchester Central Park station with a note detailing what he had done.
