A pump price war may mean the end of the road for rip-off motorway fuel.
Motorway giant Moto has started selling fuel at just 5p a litre above supermarket rates – with a price match for nearby forecourts.
The move is likely to see rivals following suit. Normally drivers filling up at service stations pay, on average, 22p more per litre – equivalent to £10 extra per tank.
Campaigners complain that motorists are having to “pay through the nozzle”.
Moto’s trial is operating at Frankley on the M5 near Birmingham and Lancaster, Lancashire on the M6. There are plans to extend it to Moto’s 46 other petrol stations.
The AA found last week most service stations charged up to 149p for a litre of petrol, compared to the UK average of 126p.
Yesterday, at the Lancaster Moto it was 129.9p a litre, and 130.9p at Frankley.
The AA’s Luke Bosdet said: “One of the certainties of a post-lockdown staycation will be drivers running the gauntlet of sky-high motorway pump prices.
“The AA very much welcomes Moto’s trial as motoring families celebrate their freedom.”
