Services of 4 meter-reading agencies terminated

NASHIK: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) in Nashik zone has terminated the services of four meter-reading agencies in Nashik for an alleged faulty meter-reading process.

The MSEDCL has already decided to take stern action against the faulty meter readers as it affected the consumers' trust in the company.

“To create an atmosphere of trust and faith among the consumers, the MSEDCL has now decided to have zero tolerance against such meter readers. Of the 21 agencies, four have been found guilty ,” the MSEDCL authorities said

Since February, the MSEDCL focused on providing accurate bills to the consumers, for which accurate reading of the meters is required.

At times, some of the meter readers punch in ‘average’ meter readings of consumers in the system based on which the energy bills for consumers are generated. In cases, where the meter readers’ guess work in average reading was less than the actual power consumed the difference of units was found to be huge when actual meter reading was taken.

“In such cases, the consumers get higher bills and there is a dispute between the consumers and the system that leads to an unpleasant situation for the consumer. After a long time, the meter reading agencies have been held responsible for there,” said a senior officer.

The authorities said such actions will force the other meter readers to take appropriate steps in reading the meters. Their performance will be monitored meticulously and all those not adhering to the norms will face action.
