Twenty passengers were forced to evacuate from a light rail train on Saturday night after it derailed, causing service disruptions on several routes.
At about 8.25pm, a light rail train on the 610 route was travelling towards Yuen Long and entering a platform at the Siu Hong stop when the wheels at the end of the train derailed at a turnout there.
“Passengers have left the carriage safely after the incident. According to initial information, no passengers were injured at the scene,” a spokesman from rail operator the MTR Corporation said.
As officers were dealing with the incident, two light rail routes – 614 and 614P – would need to adjust their services by skipping some stops. Free shuttle buses running between Tuen Mun and Siu Ho stops were provided to accommodate affected riders.
MTR chief of operations Sammy Wong Kwan-wai apologised to affected passengers during a visit to the scene, promising to get to the bottom of the incident.
“Technicians will continue to stay here to investigate and repair,” he said. “The train will be sent back to the depot later for further examination and investigation of the cause of the incident. Service will resume only under safe conditions.”
