Seriously injured teen winched into helicopter after falling 9m down Northumberland waterfall

This is the moment a teenage boy was winched into a helicopter after falling 9m down a waterfall and sustaining serious injuries.

Emergency services including paramedics and mountain rescue teams were called to Crammel Linn waterfall on the River Irthing, near Gilsland, Northumberland , on the border with Cumbria.

A 17-year-old boy who was out with his friends had slipped and fallen down the waterfall at around 5pm on Tuesday.

He fell 9m and hit a number of rock ledges before landing in the water below.

His friends pulled the injured boy out of the river, which is a popular spot for swimmers, and called for help.

The North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team arrived along with a paramedic and helped to stabilise the boy.

The Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and mountain rescue doctors alongside the paramedic provided pre-hospital care, while an evacuation plan was put in place.

Because of the boy's serious injuries, a HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter was requested and a helicopter from Prestwick made its way to the scene.

A technical rope rescue system was rigged to raise the casualty on a stretcher to a location slightly higher up the slope so he could be winched into the helicopter.

The teen was then winched on board with team members using a high line to stop the stretcher and winchman spinning out of control.

He was then flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle for treatment to multiple injuries.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "At around 6.30pm yesterday HM Coastguard’s Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre received a request for assistance from North East Ambulance Service in attending to an injured male at Crammel Linn Waterfall, Northumberland.

"HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Prestwick was sent to assist, where a North East Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were on scene.

"The casualty was winched into the helicopter and was transferred to Newcastle Royal Victoria Hospital."

A spokesperson for NEAS said: "At 5.03pm yesterday, we were called to a patient injured in Gilsland.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and two of our HART.

Emergency services and mountain rescue teams stood down at around 9pm.

Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team is reliant on public donations to provide its emergency search and rescue service and donations can be made through their Facebook page.
