Seriously ill COVID-19 patients hit record 1,563 in Japan

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients nationwide on Sunday hit 1,563, setting a record for the third consecutive day, according to the health ministry.

The figure rose by 42 from Saturday.

The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 4,295 new cases of coronavirus infection on Sunday, the figure exceeding 4,000 for the fifth consecutive day.

It was the highest daily tally for a Sunday, with an increase of 229 from the previous week.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital hit 251, a record high after that number rose by six from the previous day.

In Shizuoka Prefecture, 394 new cases of the virus were found on Sunday, a record high for the prefecture.
