Seriously ill baby struck off GP patient list after mum 'complained about staff member'

A sick baby has been removed from a GP's patient list after her parents claim they complained about a member of staff at the practice.

Lorraine Cooper and Scott Hunter have struggled to cope since little Bella was born 25 weeks early in July.

The five-month-old is deaf and suffers serious health problems requiring 24 hour oxygen, the Wishaw Press reports.

Lorraine explained the couple have been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, caused by the trauma of Bella's birth and the aftermath.

She says the family has been let down by the support offered to them at the medical centre.

She told the paper: "Since I moved to Wishaw from Moffat I had dealings with one staff member who called me a disgrace in front of three others.

"Both myself and Scott have really been struggling since Bella was born but the language used was not what I expect from a health care professional.

"I wrote a hand-written letter to the practice manager voicing my concerns.

"I was not abusive in any way but we then all received letters, including Bella, to say we had all been struck off."

Lorraine and Scott said this week they will be submitting a formal complaint against the practice and the individual staff member.

They have since managed to find a new practice but still have serious questions they would like answered.

Scott said: "I am just disgusted with the whole situation.

"Bella even got a letter sent through to her saying she had been struck off.

"It's the way we've been spoken to by the individual in question.

"We have both been struggling with mental health issues.

"It's been so hard over the past few months and there was no empathy there at all.

"I was able to get a support worker in place but that has been it.

"The whole situation could have been handled a lot better."

A spokesperson for Lanarkshire NHS said: "We are sorry to hear the family have been struggling since the birth of their daughter Bella and are upset by being removed from their GP practice.

"GPs are independent contractors and can remove patients from their list if they have reasonable grounds to do so and they are obliged to inform the patient of this decision."
