Serious Leeds United warning for Liverpool after Premier League fixtures released

Leeds United have never lost a top flight match on the opening day of any Premier League season.

Marco Bielsa's side will travel to Anfield on matchday one and line up against the defending champions.

Liverpool take on the newly-promoted Championship winners on September 12.

This will be Leeds' first campaign in the Premier League since their relegation in 2003/04.

And according to Opta, the Elland Road club have played more Premier League matches on MD1 without losing than any other team in the competition’s history (P12 W5 D7).

It will be vital for Jurgen Klopp's men to get off to a good start against their historic rivals as only one team in Premier League history has lost their first game in the season and gone on to win the title.

The last time the Reds played Leeds was in the League Cup fifth round in 2016 when Divock Origi and Ben Woodburn both scored to seal a 2-0 home victory for Liverpool.

The two sides last met at Anfield in the top flight back in October 2003 when Gerard Houllier's then side ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Michael Owen, Danny Murphy and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

And the last time Liverpool were defending league champions and played the promoted winners of the second tier, it was against Leeds on January 1, 1991. The Reds won 3 - 0 with goals from John Barnes, Ronny Rosenthal and Ian Rush.

Overall, Liverpool have played the Whites 115 times in officially recognised matches; winning 58, drawing 30 and losing 27 while scoring 184 goals and conceding 112.
