'Serious knocks' - Wycombe Wanderers wait on duo's fitness ahead of Bolton test

Wycombe Wanderers will be waiting to see if they have the duo of Anthony Stewart and David Wheeler back available for next weekend's trip to Bolton Wanderers.

The duo were missing from the Chair Boys' draw at home to AFC Wimbledon over the weekend, with Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth confirming afterwards that they missed the clash due to illness.

Ainsworth confirmed at present that he has players who are turning out for his side carrying some 'serious knocks'.

Though he did not confirm the identity of these players, he said they including playing with injections and even stitches in feet as he thanked his squad for playing through the pain barrier.

And he hopes his side can build upon their point against the Wombles against Wanderers at the UniBol next Saturday, where he will hope to have both Stewart and Wheeler back available for selection, the duo having played against Wanderers in last month's 1-0 win over Ian Evatt's side at Adams Park.

Ainsworth told the club website: "Yeah he's (Stewart) got illness and David Wheeler has unfortunately got illness as well. I'm sure there's going to be more clubs and more around the country with the winter coming.

"The pandemic is getting ramped up again and illness with colds and flus and people saying 'it's not this, but it's this'.

"It's going to happen, but we've just got to be as safe as we possibly can and we need to ramp up what we're doing now because it is winter, so even in a non-pandemic era you've got to watch your colds and flu over winter time.

"Keeping the squad together and keeping them healthy is going to be really important. There's a few tired legs in there and if I'm honest a couple of players played with some serious knocks as well.

"Stitches in feet and injections here and there, so thank you boys fot going through the pain barrier for me.

"We didn't quite get there today but we'll take a point all day as long as we can back it up next week away at Bolton."
