Serious fire rips through 'beloved' business in Sutton-in-Ashfield

An investigation is underway at a launderette in a Nottinghamshire town following a "serious" fire in the early hours of the morning (Saturday, July 31).

The incident happened just before 3am in Lime Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, at the Coin Wash launderette.

It has been described as a "beloved" local business by a councillor who is now seeking to provide support.

Pictures from the scene show the building which has been damaged by the fire and blackened by the resulting smoke.

Councillor David Hennigan, who represents Sutton Central and New Cross, told Nottinghamshire Live: "The launderette is one of our most-beloved businesses.

"It has served the communities of New Cross and Sutton for a generation. We have instructed our council’s out of hours team to attend and assist in securing the launderette once the fire investigation is completed.

"Both councillor Deakin and I will continue to do everything we can. The launderette is in a heavily congested area of New Cross but it’s too early to know what the cause was.

"I would encourage anybody with any information to call Police [on] 101."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's fire investigation unit is at the scene alongside Nottinghamshire Police.

A spokesman for the fire service added: "The first emergency response call was at 2.43am.

"It was at a launderette and is what we would consider a serious fire.

"We had three fire engines attend from Ashfield and Mansfield, plus support from Derbyshire from Alfreton."
