Serious crash on M8 sees multiple people rushed to hospital and closes lane

A huge emergency response has rushed to a serious crash on the M8 near Whitburn that involved two vehicles.

It is understood that several people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after the incident occurred at around 09:05am this morning.

Junction 4 on the M8 has been closed as a result.

It is believed that one of the vehicles involved was a lorry.

It is understood that the injuries as a result of the collision are serious with a host of ambulances and multiple trauma teams in attendance at the scene.

Those planning on commuting using this route are advised to make alternative plans.

Traffic Scotland tweeted that vehicles on the route will be taken off at Junction 4 and rejoin at Junction 5.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they have four pumps and a heavy rescue unit at the scene.

A passenger, who did not wish to be named, was able to capture the tailbacks caused by the incident when travelling in the opposite direction.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.50am on Sunday, October 17, police were called to the M8 at junction 4, near Bathgate, following the report of a serious two-vehicle road crash.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is currently closed.”
