'Serious crash' on M74 as police seal off Scots motorway for several hours

A 'serious road crash' closed off one of Scotland' busiest motorways with emergency crews on the scene for several hours.

Police were called to the M74 near Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway on Saturday afternoon.

Officers were alerted to a one-vehicle crash on the southbound carriageway, which took place at around 2.20pm.

No injuries have been reported at this stage.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been revealed by police.

At around 4.20pm on Saturday officers confirmed the incident and stated that emergency crews remained at the scene while road closures and diversions were still in place.

A police spokeswoman told the Record: “At around 2.20pm on Saturday, December 18 officers were called to a report of a serious road crash on M74 southbound at Ecclefechan involving one vehicle.

"Emergency services are at the scene.

"The road remains closed and diversions are in place.”

Traffic Scotland released a statement at around 6pm on Saturday, revealing the area was still sealed off to motorists, who were urged to avoid the area.

The statement read: "That's all from us tonight, folks.

"Stay safe if you're out and about.

"The #A74(M) S/B remains closed at J19 following an earlier RTC so do avoid if possible."

The Daily Record contacted Police Scotland for an update on Saturday evening but no further details were available.
