Serious crash on M1 causing delays as emergency services attend scene

Emergency services are dealing with a crash on the M1 involving a minibus and a car.

Drivers using the M1 Westbound around junction 10 at Lough Rd, Lurgan are advised to expect lengthy delays.

The inner lane remains obstructed by two vehicles involved in the incident with three fire crew, police and ambulance personnel at the scene.

It is the second collision on the M1 today and is expected to affect junctions 10 and 11 for some hours.

The other incident is still affecting junction 11 and 12 but it remains passable on the hard shoulder for traffic around Moira, Lurgan and Portadown.

The incidents happened as temperatures dipped further after barely getting above freezing in many areas across most of the afternoon.

And a weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland overnight with ice set to hit the country.

The Met Office predicted icy patches and hill snow may lead to some travel disruption early on Tuesday.

And they warned that drivers should expect “some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths”.

Temperatures are expected to be below as -1C tonight.

The PSNI urged people to avoid all necessary travel where possible, adding: “Driving conditions are hazardous on many routes this morning due to freezing temperatures. If you must venture out, please reduce your speed and drive to suit the conditions.”

Gritter lorries are out in force across Northern Ireland this evening.
