Serious crash on busy Ayrshire road sparks 50 mile diversion

A busy Ayrshire road is closed this evening due to a serious crash.

The A76 has been sealed off both ways between Pathhead and New Cumnock as crews work to clear the incident.

It is likely to be closed for some time, according to Traffic Scotland.

An update on their website reads: "The A76 at New Cumnock in both directions is currently closed due to a road traffic incident. Road users are advised to used an alternative route at this time."

On a diversion they added: "Northbound Commence north of the C133 Drumlanrig, Carronbridge - turn right to A702 continue north to Abingdon Services Roundabouts M74 Junction 13 - 1st roundabout take 2nd exit to next roundabout – take 2nd exit to B7078 continue to A70 (Millbank) - turn left to A70 continue through Muirkirk and Cumnock to rejoin A76 at A70 junction. Distance: 50 miles.

"Southbound Commence at A76 at A70 (Cumnock) turn left to A70 continue towards M74 Junction 12 – turn right to the B7078 to the roundabouts at Abingdon Services/ M74 Junction 13 – at 1st roundabout take 2nd exit to next roundabout – take 2nd exit to A702 - follow to A76 at Carronbridge to rejoin route. Distance: 50 miles."
