Serious crash brings M74 to standstill as emergency crews block off road

A serious rush-hour crash brought one of Scotland's busiest stretches of motorway to a standstill.

Police, fire, ambulance and air ambulance crews rushed to the M74's northbound carriageway at junction 20, near Kirtlebridge in Dumfreis-shire, just before 5pm.

Only one vehicle is believed to have been involved in the smash, however police did not disclose the make of the motor.

The exact circumstances around the crash or if there have been any injuries are not known at this time.

The motorway was still closed as of 8.15pm.

Traffic that's been piling up right through rush-hour is being diverted along the B7076 and it's believed the road will 'remain closed for some time'.

A Police spokeswoman revealed that the Scottish Ambulance Service, fire and air ambulance crews were also called to the scene.

They said: "We received a report of a serious crash believed to involve one vehicle on the M74 northbound, near junction 20, around 4.45pm on Wednesday, July 21.

"Officers are in attendance alongside the Scottish ambulance service, fire service and air ambulance."
