Serie A set return date with clubs uniting in bid to push through season finale

All 20 Serie A clubs have voted to finish the 2019/20 season upon the lifting of lockdown measures in Italy.

The Italian top-flight has been in limbo since the beginning of March as the country became a hotbed for coronavirus in Europe.

Matches in the north were postponed as early as February and no games have taken place since March 9 but there may now be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Teams will return to team training on May 18, with the Italian lockdown due to ease the day before.

And a vote between all 20 clubs in the first tier showed unanimous support to finishing the season, according to Italian broadcaster Adriano Del Monte.

But any return must be approved by government figures who this week were critical of the stances shared by Italian clubs and the Italian FA, the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC).

On Wednesday, Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora said: "I see an increasingly narrow path for the resumption of the Serie A.

"If I were one of the presidents (of the clubs) I would focus on the next season.

“If the championship should ever resume, it will certainly be behind closed doors.”

The race for the Scudetto has been incredibly tight and if the league is ended early it would be difficult to proclaim a winner, with Juventus leading Lazio by one point in their quest for a ninth league title in a row.

Paris Saint-Germain were awarded the French Ligue 1 title on Thursday.
