Serie A plan to end season in August following UEFA agreement

UEFA and the European Club Association have reached an agreement to end the current season in August - a two month delay, according to reports.

Spanish radio station Cadena SER, via Football Italia, are reporting that European Leagues will conclude before UEFA competitions in August - with Serie A, Italy’s top flight being the focus of the report.

To fulfil a conclusion to the season, sides will play behind closed doors to complete outstanding fixtures.

There is also the possibility that two-legged UEFA fixtures - including Champions League and Europa League matches will be one legged affairs played out at neutral stadiums without supporters to avoid any further fixture congestion.

Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

Only yesterday, a report elsewhere claimed that UEFA had set plans to try and conclude this season's Champions League and Europa League campaigns during one three-week block during August, with Premier League side Chelsea being one of four English sides that are currently left in European competition this season, along with Manchester City, Wolves and Manchester United.

Furthermore, the decision will allow the next season to start with little impact - beginning after a short break at the start of September.

While Italy and Spain are beginning to show signs of easing their coronavirus lockdowns, the UK has shown no signs of lifting restrictions yet as plans reportedly move forward to return to football in June for the agreed August finish.
