Serie A club distances themselves from signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo

Serie A giants AS Roma have denied that they were interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window.

The Manchester United star claimed in an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV that several clubs were interested in signing him in the summer but that he opted to remain at Old Trafford. Ronaldo did tell the Reds before the start of pre-season that he wished to join another club should a 'reasonable' offer be submitted.

Ronaldo has stated that he rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia but that there was other deals on the table for him. One club that was linked with the 37-year-old in Italy was Roma.

Ex- United boss Jose Mourinho is currently in the hot seat at the Stadio Olimpico and has previously coached Ronaldo at Real Madrid. However, AS Roma's director of sport Tiago Pinto has denied that his fellow countryman was ever a target.

Speaking to reporters at the Thinking Football Summit via Football Italia, Pinto said: "One of the things that irritates me about Italy is that they are constantly talking about the transfer market. The truth is that Cristiano Ronaldo was never a possibility.

"These rumours had no foundation, but in Italy they talk every day about three different players linked with your club. I understand it was natural to link us because Mourinho and I are both Portuguese, and so is Cristiano, but as I said, there was never any substance in it."

Ronaldo seems destined to leave Old Trafford following the bombshell interview with Morgan this week. The 37-year-old criticised the club, Erik ten Hag, the Glazers and former teammates Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney during the 90-minute conversation.

United released a statement on Friday which read that they are currently taking 'appropriate steps' to deal with Ronaldo following the interview. MEN Sport understands that are weighing up the possibility of sacking and suing Ronaldo for his comments.
