Serial thief went 'berserk' and threw chair at Tesco staff after being caught shoplifting

A serial thief went "berserk" in Tesco and chucked a chair at staff after being caught shoplifting.

Ann Marie Simpson frequently used a 10p 'Bag for Life' to steal goods, including nine bottles of vodka, from branches of Asda and Tesco.

South Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard she was caught by security staff in Tesco during her latest shoplifting spree.

After being escorted into a room by the staff, Simpson lost control and threw a chair as they struggled to restrain the 32-year-old.

Prosecutor Keith Laidlaw told the court: "She was going berserk."

In mitigation, the defendant's latest crime was blamed on her having her Universal Credit stopped.

Simpson said she had been left homeless after leaving prison last month as her rent had become unaffordable.

District Judge Kate Meek sent Simpson to prison and slammed her "horrendous" criminal record.

Simpson, formerly of Emlyn Road, South Shields, was jailed for 18 weeks after admitting two counts of theft.

The District Judge added another week onto her sentence after ruling there was "no prospect" she would pay the £770 she owed to the court for previous crimes.
