The second season of the hit podcast Serial is slated to begin in autumn, with a third instalment of the This American Life spin-off planned for spring 2016.
In a newsletter to fans of the podcast its creator and host, Sarah Koenig, outlined plans for the show, which became one of the cultural talking points of 2014 when it revisited the 1999 case of murdered Baltimore teen Hae Min Lee and her former boyfriend Adnan Syed – who was convicted of her murder.
The former Baltimore Sun reporter gave away few details on the specifics of the new series, only saying the podcasts would be different from the first instalment, but she reassured fans they would be equally interesting.
“As it stands, we intend to launch season two this fall and season three next spring,” Koenig wrote. “Sorry – we can’t tell you details about the new stories yet. What we can say is that they’re very different from season one, but no less interesting to us.”
She also gave an update on the current status of Adnan Syed’s case, which is in flux after Asia McClain – a potential alibi witness for Syed who featured heavily in the podcast – came forward.
“The appeals court has certainly cracked open a door. And anytime a court opens a door to new testimony – new fact-finding – that’s a big deal for the appellee,” she wrote.
When it debuted in 2014, Serial reached 5m downloads faster than any other podcast in iTunes history, with the real-life murder mystery topping podcast charts in US, Canada, UK and Australia.
