Serial rapist David Hegarty 'boasting about being engaged to woman' since prison release

Serial rapist David Hegarty has been boasting about being engaged to a woman since his release from prison.

The sicko made the claims to colleagues at a Dublin retail warehouse just before he was told to pack his bags for not revealing his criminal past to employers.

According to one source, the 44-year-old predator, who travelled to work on an electric scooter, used a fake name and invented a fictitious life for himself.

We revealed earlier this month how the Cork native, who was released from Dublin’s Arbour Hill Prison in 2019, had been spotted prowling Dublin parks.

One source said they were shocked to discover that the rapist was working alongside them at a warehouse where there are many female staff members.

They said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw his picture in the paper. He was working alongside girls in the warehouse and using the same unisex toilets.

“There is no way he was going to be allowed to continue working in the warehouse once it was discovered who he really was.

“He was going by a different name too. When he returned to work after the article had appeared in the paper with his picture he was told to clear his locker.

“Apparently management had no idea whatsoever about his past. When confronted he didn’t deny a thing either.

“He also made out that he didn’t know what all the fuss was about. He told fellow employees that he was engaged to a woman too.

“He also boasted about having a child with the woman he is about to marry.

“It would appear that he has worked in a few different warehouses as a few of the lads recognised him from previous jobs they were in too.”

Hegarty was jailed for 13 years in 2009 over an early morning attack on a nurse.

The twisted predator – who also pleaded guilty to raping two women in Cork city centre on October 5 and October 27, 1998 – has lost weight and changed his appearance.

In 2019, the father-of-one, with a previous address at Nutley Road, Mahon in Cork, was living at homeless accommodation in Dublin city after release from Arbour Hill Prison.

A Garda spokesman explained how sex offenders are monitored.

He said: “An Garda Siochana is committed to protecting communities and individuals from the dangers and the harm associated with sex offenders.

“An Garda Siochana and the relevant agencies have developed significant experience and expertise in this area.

“The Sex Offender Management and Intelligence Unit based at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau has the national remit for overseeing the monitoring and management of
sex offenders.

“Offenders who are subject to the requirements of the Sex Offenders Act, 2001 have an assigned liaison garda or sergeant and are monitored and managed in the community.”
