It highlighted the case of Adnan Syed, a man convicted of murdering his classmate Hae Min Lee, made a star of reporter Sarah Koenig and gave advertiser MailChimp an unlikely boost. Now the Serial podcast team are said to have found their next real-life crime case to investigate – a much more high-profile affair.

Maxim.com has spoken to several anonymous sources connected to the case of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who say they have been approached by the Serial team. Bergdahl, a US soldier who spent five years in Taliban captivity, now faces life in prison after being freed last year in a prisoner swap with five Guantánamo Bay detainees.

Bergdahl has been accused of desertion after leaving his post in combat outpost Mest-Malak in Paktika province, Afghanistan, in 2009 and being captured by Taliban fighters. Conflicting reports of his actions have emerged, which could make the case fertile ground for Serial’s methodical style of finding multiple angles and interviewing as many people as possible.
