Serial offender says he lapsed into old ways because of struggle to cope with lockdown

A serial offender claims he lapsed into his old ways because he struggled to cope with lockdown.

William Campbell appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted stealing items from two vehicles in Anderson Street, Hamilton, on July 21.

Campbell also admitted being found outside a house in the same street in suspicious circumstances and stealing money from a vehicle in nearby McGowan Place.

The 42-year-old was also appearing for sentence on further charges including theft, reset and shoplifting.

In addition, the court was due to review a drug treatment and testing order imposed earlier.

Defence agent Stephen MacBride said Campbell had “relapsed” and committed further offences during the course of the DTTO.

His client had responded well to the “rigorous testing regime” of the order until the service was affected by the Covid-19 lockdown in March.

Mr MacBride told the court: “Through no one’s fault that was taken away from him and he missed being in that situation.

“There have been some relapses as a result.”

Sheriff Linda Nicolson revoked the DTTO and, after hearing that Campbell is in custody on another matter, continued the cases until December 22.
