A serial lager thief has been jailed again at his own request - so he can finish a training course to get a job and stay off the booze.
Trevor Muirhead had been due to be freed from Low Moss Prison, Bishopbriggs, later this month [FEB] after serving a sentence for stealing drink.
But he begged not to be freed because he wanted to complete a qualification.
Muirhead, 46, of Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, appeared for sentence - by video link from the jail - at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday [Feb 3rd], after pleading guilty on Christmas Eve to three new charges of stealing cases of lager.
He took the boxes in three separate pre-Christmas shoplifting incidents, on the 5th, 15th, and 22nd of December (2021), from the Spar shop in Charlotte Dundas Court, Grangemouth.
Defence solicitor Simon Hutchison asked the court to impose a sentence that would allow his client to stay in jail a little longer.
Mr Hutchison said: "Mr Muirhead tells me he is enjoying his time in custody. He is doing an employability course and he wants to finish it and gain some qualifications at the end of it.
"He then wants to be able to obtain employment.
"He has a pretty horrendous recent record for shoplifting. It's always a couple of dozen cans of lager, because he was drinking 20 to 30 cans a day.
"Custody is helping with regard to that.
"He is asking for a sentence now that is consecutive to his present sentence."
Sheriff Christopher Shead told Muirhead: "In these unusual circumstances, the court will impose a sentence of four months, and order that sentence to run consecutive to the one you're currently serving."
Muirhead replied: "Thank you, your Honour."
