Serial arsonist set up to 15 fires at new National Children's Hospital in one week

A serial arsonist has set up to 15 fires at the new National Children’s Hospital in a week.

And the Irish Mirror can reveal seven of the blazes occurred on the same day at the Dublin site.

A source said: “There has been a sinister element to this and obviously there are concerns it could cause real damage if it continues, not only to the building but also to any of the large number of workers.

“It began randomly and has continued for a number of days now.”

Gardai are investigating the fires, the first of which occurred last Wednesday.

Seven of the blazes happened the following day.

In one of the worst incidents, a bollard was set alight before being flung down an elevator shaft.

Some of the fires have been large and have forced work to be temporarily stopped and the vast site evacuated.

It is understood there could be up to 1,500 construction workers present at any one time.

Another source added: “At the moment, there is a pattern emerging. There is a strong possibility the person responsible is working onsite but that has yet to be confirmed.”

Gardai confirmed they are investigating and the probe is being led by Kilmainham station.

A spokesperson said: “No injuries were reported in any of the incidents. No arrests have been made to date. Investigations are ongoing.”

This morning, a spokesman for BAM told us: "This is a matter for the Gardai and BAM has no further comment to make."
