Sergio Romero set to join Italian side Venezia on free transfer after Manchester United exit

Sergio Romero is set to join newly-promoted Serie A side Venezia on a free transfer with talks in the 'final stages'.

That's according to transfer specialist Fabrizo Romano who has revealed Romero, 34, is on the brink of joining the Italian side.

There was a time at Manchester United when Romero was widely regarded as one of the world's finest goalkeeping deputies, but he would soon dramatically fall out with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he was dropped in the 2020 Europa League semi-final.

Solskjaer started David de Gea in that semi-final defeat against Sevilla and Romero was deeply hurt by the decision. He subsequently asked to leave United that summer, but his proposed loan move to Everton was blocked - the feud then worsened, though.

Romero's wife took to Instagram to hit out against the decision to block his loan move on deadline day and the stopper was permanently axed from Solskjaer's plans, which meant he spent last season frozen out until his contract at the club ran down.

That condemned the Argentinian to a disappointing end to his six years spent in Manchester.

Romero's contract officially expired at Old Trafford at the end of May and no club had since reached a deal to sign him as a free agent, however, newly promoted Venezia are now understood to be close to completing a deal for the former United shot-stopper.

Romero made a total of 61 appearances for United and he won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during his stay.
