Sergio Reguilon makes surprise admission about his summer transfer to Tottenham from Real Madrid

Left-back Sergio Reguilon has revealed that his move from Real Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur back in September was completely out of his control.

After a successful loan spell at Sevilla last season, Reguilon was heavily linked with a plethora of clubs, particularly in England, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs.

Following several months of speculation, it was Spurs that won the race for his signature, landing him on a five-year contract in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £32million.

Reguilon arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alongside Gareth Bale, who returned to Spurs on a season-long loan from the Spanish giants.

So far, Reguilon, who returned to the starting line-up for Sunday's 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion after missing the Europa League tussle with Ludogorets through illness, has impressed in his new surroundings, claiming three assists in his first eight matches.

Now that he is fully settled into life north London, the Spaniard has revealed that he had little say in his move from the Bernabeu.

“I’m not in Madrid because it’s something that wasn’t up to me," said Reguilon, as quoted by TEAMtalk. "My conscience is very clear. You can’t be frustrated about decisions you don’t get to make.

"I didn’t get to speak with [Zinedine] Zidane."

Despite that, Reguilon admits he will always be grateful to Madrid for giving him a platform to build upon.

He continued: "They’ve given me everything and I will always have a very special affection for them.”

Though Reguilon insists he had no say in his switch to Tottenham, the Spanish full-back has been delighted with what he has learned about working under Jose Mourinho so far.

“He is a great person and wins a lot in the short term,” Reguilon said via Sport Witness. “Jose Mourinho has surprised me in a good way. He has many good things about him."
