Sergio Reguilon explains summer transfer decision amid Manchester United interest

Sergio Reguilon revealed that he chose to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer due to the proposal that the London club offered, despite interest from other clubs, including Manchester United.

MEN Sport understands that United tracked Reguilon last season during his impressive loan spell with Sevilla.

The Spanish full-back, who was called up to the international squad on the back of his excellent performances for Sevilla, was monitored by United's recruitment team throughout the summer.

However, by the end of the window, he signed with Spurs and he has endeared himself to the north London fans ever since.

And when asked why he signed with Spurs ahead of other teams, Reguilon highlighted the presence of Gareth Bale, who he knew from his time at Real Madrid, and the plans that the club laid out for him as reasons to make the move.

"I was talking with him when we were with Madrid and said, ‘Gareth, maybe I go to Tottenham’," the full-back said as reported by The Mirror.

"And he said, ‘Really? Me too! No way!’ In the end, it was amazing.

"In the summer, I had a big decision and with all the clubs on the table, I chose Tottenham.

"Because of their proposal, the team, the league, the club, the city… there are so many factors that said ‘yes’.

"Because of Gareth also and the personnel at the club, with Daniel Levy and with Jose Mourinho and everything – it was very important."

By the end of the window, United signed their own left-back, Alex Telles from Porto.

United also already had Luke Shaw in the squad, and the former Southampton man had started to rediscover his best form prior to the end of last season post-lockdown.

Shaw continued that form this season, and after an injury-hit time at Old Trafford, he is now enjoying his most fruitful period at the club, with a potential recall to the England set-up touted.

Shaw was named United's Player of the Month for February, has created the third-most chances in Europe's top-five leagues since the turn of the year, and has six assists across the entire season in all competitions.

While Reguilon chose Spurs and has impressed in north London, United have not missed him thanks to Shaw's improvements.

And with Telles now backing him up, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are well-stocked at the left-back position for years to come.
