Sergio Pettis not ashamed to do what it took for much-needed win at UFC Mexico

MEXICO CITY – Sergio Pettis beat Tyson Nam with a unanimous decision Saturday on the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN+ 17 in Mexico City.

Take a look inside the fight with Pettis, who won in his return to flyweight after a one-fight stint – a loss – at bantamweight.

Result: Sergio Pettis def. Tyson Nam via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Updated records: Pettis (18-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC), Nam (18-10-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC)
Key stat: All nine of Pettis’ wins in the UFC have come by decision.

Pettis on the fight’s key moment

“I knew he was going to be tough – he’s a Hawaiian guy, and all the Hawaiian people are tough. He went out there and he tried to end me. Every punch he threw was heat. So I went out there and played a safe game. … I went out there and did what it took.”

Pettis on winning in Mexico

“It felt good to come back and get a win. Coming off of two losses, it was tough to come back and stay positive. I had to go out there and do what it takes to get my hand raised. It felt great to fight again in Mexico my second time here. As soon as I got off the plane, I felt the energy, the colors of the town, the graffiti. The people here are so amazing. I may not speak Spanish, but I’m of Mexican heritage, so I’m proud of fighting in front of all my people.”

Pettis on what he wants next

“I just want to recover now, eat some tacos, have some tequila, and go back to the drawing board, getting better and better.”
