Sergio Perez may make Max Verstappen sacrifice at home Mexican GP amid Lewis Hamilton fight

Sergio Perez knows he might have to shelve his own dream of winning at his home Grand Prix for the benefit of his title-hunting team-mate Max Verstappen.

The Dutchman comes into the Mexican Grand Prix 12 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton at the top of the table, and will be looking to extend his advantage at a track which should favour the Red Bull cars due to its altitude.

Meanwhile, Perez arrives in his homeland dreaming of becoming the first Mexican to win an F1 race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The 31-year-old knows, however, that his desire may well end up being secondary to the wishes of the team considering the wider circumstances of the title race.

Perez refused to rule out the possibility of being ordered by his team to give up the race lead to Verstappen at some point on Sunday.

But he did say he believes everyone in the team is rooting for him to grab his second race win of the season and only the third of his career this weekend.

"I think it will be a great problem to have from my side, you know?" he told reporters.

"It always depends on the situation, because most of the decisions are normally taken during the race, during the heat of the event, so I think that depending on the circumstances, we'll see.

"But I'm pretty sure the whole team, Red Bull, everyone, wants me to win this weekend.

"I think everyone is so enthusiastic, everyone at my team, the crowd – it's a very special venue for us.

"We'll see through the race, but I'm pretty sure that everyone in this team... if there's a race they want me to win, it's this one. So I'm sure I'll have full support from everyone in my team."

While Red Bull currently have a slender advantage in the drivers' standings, they are the ones doing the chasing when it comes to the constructors' title battle.

Mercedes have a 23-point advantage heading into the race in Mexico City, though that is a much more narrow margin than it was before Red Bull scored a double podium last time out in Austin.

For the purposes of that title fight, a Perez victory this weekend augmented by another podium for Verstappen would go a long way in Christian Horner 's quest to end the Silver Arrows' seven-year dominance of the constructors' championship.
