While golf is mostly a game of skill, luck does occasionally come into play. But in Sergio Garcia’s case, that luck turned on him at the 13th hole at the U.S. Open on Saturday.
Garcia was the latest golfer to feel the wrath of the flagstick at Torrey Pines. Garcia was on his fourth shot at the par-5 13th hole when his ball ricocheted off the flagstick and sent the ball rolling back toward Garcia. Before him, it was Martin Laird and Phil Mickelson that were denied by the flagstick in the first round.
When all was said and done, Garcia finished the 13th hole with a two-putt for a double-bogey 7.
Still just unbelievable luck for Garcia, and you could feel the pain from the announcer’s “Oh no” to the look of annoyance on Garcia’s face as the ball rolled to a stop in front of his feet.
