Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will not play for Barcelona for the next three months as the club evaluate the extent of his heart problems.
Aguero was taken off in the first half against Alaves after suffering from chest pains.
Interim manager Sergi Barjuan said after the match that Aguero was “calm” and will remain in hospital for Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Dynamo Kiev.
Inter Milan and Denmark international Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for his country at European Championships in the summer and has not played since.
Barcelona are taking every precaution with the 33-year-old and released a statement on Tuesday confirming the next steps in his recovery after Sport claims initial examinations found arrhythmia, whereby the heart beats with an irregular rhythm.
“The first team player Sergio Aguero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada. He is unavailable for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process.
“The Argentine was taken to hospital for cardiological evaluation on Saturday following the Barça v Alaves game in which the Barça striker felt unwell in the first half and was replaced before half time by Philippe Coutinho.”
Aguero spent a decade at City, helping them win the Premier League five times, he League Cup six times and one FA Cup.
Leaving on a free transfer after his contract expired with City in the summer, Aguero joined Barcelona signing a two-year contract.
