Sergio Aguero: Manchester City striker tests positive for Covid-19 with symptoms

Sergio Aguero has tested positive for Covid-19, with the Manchester City striker confirming that he is experiencing symptoms and will continue self-isolating.

City’s record goalscorer was already quaratining having missed his side’s last four games - including Wednesday night’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa - after coming into close contact with somebody who had tested positive for the virus.

Aguero tweeted on Thursday to confirm that he has tested positive himself and that he will continue to be unavailable to manager Pep Guardiola.

“After a close contact, I've been self-isolating and the latest test I took was positive for COVID 19. I had some symptoms and I'm following doctor's orders for recovery," the 32-year-old said.

Aguero is yet to score a Premier League goal this season and has only made nine appearances in all competitions due to a string of enforced absences.

The Argentina international underwent knee surgery in the summer, delaying his return from injury until mid-October, and then suffered a hamstring injury.

Aguero appeared as a late substitute in the 3-1 win at Chelsea earlier this month but has been unavailable to Guardiola ever since, with the City manager eager for him to return.

"We miss him," Guardiola said earlier this week. "The numbers speak for themselves. He is the best striker in our history. We need Aguero."

Guardiola has dismissed suggestions that Aguero’s injury record and Gabriel Jesus’ struggles for consistency will force City into the transfer market for a striker this month.

Aguero’s current Etihad contract is set to expire at the end of the season, allowing him to end a decade-long association with City by leaving as a free agent.
