Sergio Aguero has apologised for missing a penalty as Chelsea came from behind to put Manchester City's title celebrations on hold.
Aguero failed miserably with a Panenka-style spot-kick with Pep Guardiola's men 1-0 ahead - and on course for the three points that would reclaim the Premier League.
And Chelsea came storming back to beat the team they will face in the Champions League final thanks to goals by Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso.
Aguero took to Twitter to say: “I would like to apologise to my team-mates, staff and supporters for missing the penalty. It was a bad decision and I take full responsibility.”
Guardiola refused to blame the Argentine striker who famously scored the goal that clinched City's first title in 44 years back in 2012.
Aguero, 32, will leave the Etihad after a decade which has seen him become the club's record goalscorer.
A statue has been commissioned in his honour.
Guardiola said: “Listen, it's selfish because he misses. But if he scores a goal we say what a genius he is.
“That's the reality. I always tell the players to make a decision – Panenka, right, left, whatever you want. But be committed.
“Sergio is a sensible guy and we all know what he has done for the club.
“He took the decision and that's all. Nobody is angry. He tried, so it's okay. He was convinced.”
The City boss also felt his side were denied a clear penalty in the closing stages, when Kurt Zouma appeared to tangle legs with Raheem Sterling.
"It’s a penalty. That’s all. It’s happens, it’s football," he added. "We will try next time to score our penalty. That’'s all I can say. I saw on the TV it was a penalty.
"In 21 days we are going to face them again in the Champions League final. We will learn from that and get the points we need to be champions."
