Sergio Aguero injury: Pep Guardiola fears long lay-off for Man City striker

Pep Guardiola fears Sergio Aguero will be out for an extended period after suffering a groin injury in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea.

The Argentine pulled up in pain in the second half of the 2-1 win and immediately signalled to come off the pitch.

He is set for scans on Sunday – but Guardiola fears the worst after consulting with his striker.

The City manager said: “Aguero, we will see tomorrow. It doesn’t look good.”

David Silva also suffered a muscle strain, while Rodri also left the pitch in discomfort, with Guardiola claiming the Spain midfielder suffered cramp following his recent hamstring strain.

Victory was the perfect response to City’s defeat to Liverpool just before the international break and moved them above Chelsea into third place.

But Guardiola hailed Frank Lampard’s side for their impressive performance at the Etihad, which saw N’Golo Kante give the visitors the lead, before goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez secured victory for the home side.

Guardiola said: “We won against an incredible top side. Chelsea in the last 20 years have been great.

“Frank is a manager with courage. I judge managers with the courage to play. Chelsea do. They have a fantastic team. It was a great victory for us.”

Lampard added: “We wanted to come here, be brave, compete and you saw that from us. We had a relative control of the game.

“We were playing well, a lot of positives, but the finer details in both boxes were the difference.”
