Sergio Aguero injury looks to hand blow to Liverpool's title rivals Man City

Liverpool's Premier League title rivals Manchester City look to have suffered a blow in their attempts to retain their crown after it was confirmed that striker Sergio Aguero is suffering with an injury.

The two clubs slugged it out in the most intense title race in English top flight history last season with Liverpool's club record haul of 97 points still a point shy of reigning champions City after Pep Guardiola's side won their last 14 games to pip them.

However, with the Reds having enjoyed a 100% start to the current campaign from their opening eight Premier League fixtures – extending their run from 2018/19 to 17 consecutive victories in the competition – they have now opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the table and are odds-on to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.

City's hopes of clawing back the deficit now look to have been handed a major blow with Sergio Aguero , their all-time leading goalscorer and top scorer in all eight seasons at the club (seven times in his own right, once shared) suffering with fitness problems.

The prolific 31-year-old marksman has not been included in the Argentina squad for the current international break – they defeated Ecuador 6-1 after a 2-2 draw with Germany last Wednesday – and coach Lionel Scaloni spoke on his decision not to pick him .

He said: “Sergio Aguero is not here because he’s been carrying a problem and has not been training 100 per-cent with his club.”
