Sergio Agüero could sign a contract extension at Manchester City, with the club wanting the striker to agree a one-year increase at least.

Agüero’s current deal runs to 2019 and the striker has previously said he wants to return to Independiente in his homeland of Argentina where his career began. Agüero is still intent on doing so but may now stay longer at City, until 2020 at least.

The 27-year-old has again suffered an injury-disrupted season but has still managed to scored 18 times in 25 appearances for the club, including the consolation in City’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.

Agüero is minded to accept the new deal and it is hoped it will be confirmed before the close of the season.

Vincent Kompany will be assessed throughout the week to see if he might be available for Sunday’s visit of Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad when second in the table play fourth.

City’s weak defensive display against Leicester, in which the centre-backs Martín Demichelis and Nicolás Otamendi appeared particularly vulnerable, means Manuel Pellegrini would be keen to bring back Kompany earlier than had been planned.

However the manager is conscious that no chances should be taken given the serious nature of the calf injury that has blighted the captain’s campaign so far. If the Tottenham game is deemed too soon, the target for Kompany is to return for the FA Cup tie at Chelsea on 21 February before the trip to Dynamo Kiev three days later.
