Barcelona's pain at losing Lionel Messi has been exacerbated by the news that Sergio Aguero is set to be sidelined for 10 weeks.

The striker, who moved to Catalonia on a free transfer from Manchester City earlier this summer, has an injury to his right calf that requires treatment.

Barcelona confirmed on Monday morning that Aguero is now set to be out of action for more than two months.

It is a huge blow to Ronald Koeman’s side, who are now without Messi as he closes in on a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG are thought to be discussing a two-year contract with Messi, having moved rapidly to complete a deal after Barca announced the departure of the six-time Ballon d'Or winner on Thursday night.

An emotional Messi gave a final goodbye press conference at the Catalan club on Sunday and admitted that PSG are a possible destination, denying he had already agreed a contract.

Messi agreed to take a 50 per cent cut on his reported £123million-per-year salary and sign a new long-term contract with Barca, but they were unable to register the 34-year-old due to LaLiga's strict salary rules.

Barcelona - who beat Juventus 3-0 in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Sunday - begin the 2021/22 LaLiga season at home against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
