Sergio Aguero encouraged to join Arsenal as club "tick the right boxes"

Arsenal can provide the ideal environment for outgoing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero to flourish, according to Gunners legend Paul Merson.

Aguero will leave the Etihad this summer after 10 fruitful seasons after City chose not to extend his contract.

The Argentine's tally of 181 Premier League goals cements his status as one of all-time great centre-forwards to play in England.

The 32-year-old did not specify his next move in an emotional message to City fans, merely saying he will be ready for a "new challenge" this summer.

And Merson believes there is no better place for Aguero to spend the twilight years of his career than the Emirates.

The former England international told Sky Sports : "Will he stay in England or will his next move be abroad?

"If he stays in England, I think Arsenal would suit the style he would be looking for. They'd be a good choice.

"Mikel Arteta was at Manchester City [as assistant manager] and the way Arsenal play; they get around the box and they do create a lot of opportunities. Arsenal do tick that box for Aguero."

However, Merson admits Aguero may favour a move away from the Premier League in a bid to prolong his career.

The veteran striker has struggled with injuries over the last four seasons and has only managed five starts in all competitions this term.

Merson added: "But if does he go abroad where the intensity is not as hard as it is in England?

"He could go somewhere with a different climate and where the games are not as intense as they are in the Premier League.

"That could help with his injury problems as he moves into the latter stages of his career. It's an important move for Aguero as he moves into the final stage of a glittering career."
