Astonishing traffic cam footage shows sergeant's near miss as HGV topples on to police car on A1

A police sergeant had a near miss after a lorry toppled over on to his patrol car on the A1 on Tuesday.

Edinburgh Live reported yesterday how the route was closed to HGVs for 50 miles following a number of instances of lorries being blown over in strong winds.

And Police Scotland confirmed that a HGV collided with a police car on the stretch between Dunbar and Haddington at around 10.15am.

Chief Superintendent Stewart Carle took to social media to express his relief that the patrol sergeant who was with the vehicle wasn't seriously injured.

He posted: "Relieved that one of my Road Patrol Sergeants was not seriously injured earlier today on A1 carrying out scene protection after RTCs. Another HGV passing his static location was blown over onto the patrol car! #JobLikeNoOther"

He then shared a video which shows the terrifying moment unfolding.

In addition, Chief Superintendent Carle shared a picture of the carnage left behind at the scene, with two lorries on their sides – one being propped up by the patrol car.

Parts of the A1 were closed to all traffic on Tuesday while emergency services dealt with a number of incidents, while a huge 50-mile stretch of the road was completely closed to lorries.

Road Policing Scotland added: "Apologies if you were affected by the A1 being shut earlier, however public safety will always be our number one priority. The conditions were treacherous & several incidents of HGVs being blown over, inc one on top of one of our vehicles."

Storm Brendan caused chaos in Edinburgh yesterday with the Christmas Market closing to the public, trees collapsing on to cars in Holyrood Park, a Haymarket platform closing due to a damaged chimney and a number of city attractions being forced to shut.
