Serge Atakayi issues Rangers social media plea as mystery over Ibrox starlet deepens

Serge Atakayi has issued a social media plea amid mystery over his situation at Rangers .

The 20-year-old academy star spent last season on-loan in Finland with SJK before returning to Ibrox this summer.

However, he's fallen off the radar over the past month having last appeared in a development squad friendly against Cambridge United in July.

Atakayi has now taken to Instagram to make his plight public as he revealed he's desperate to get back on the pitch.

The Finland U-19 international shared a picture from his SJK stint on Instagram with a caption that translates to: "Let me play again".

Atakayi has made only one senior appearance for Rangers but his immediate first-team hopes appear bleak, despite revealing in April that Steven Gerrard had made him part of his plans for next season.

Speaking after being unveiled at HJK, he said: "I came to SJK because I need some playing time.

"Rangers saw this as the best solution for me.  Steven Gerrard  has told me he thinks I can play for the first team next season.

"I spoke to Rangers and told them I wanted to sign for SJK because Alexei Eremenko is like a father to me.

"Many Finnish clubs wanted me, but I think the style of football they play here is attractive and I can't wait to play here."

But it appears Atakayi has now drifted out of the picture with the development squad too, being omitted for wins over Ajax and Fleetwood Town in recent days.

There's been no indication of injury troubles and his Instagram post certainly suggests he's fit to play.

And while other youngsters such as Josh McPake, Glenn Middleton and Zak Rudden have made loan moves, that hasn’t been the case for Atakayi.

His current deal runs until 2020 which raises the prospect of a permanent exit, unless there's a new contract in the pipeline.

However, any move would have to be completed over the next six days with the transfer window set to close next week.
