This was an absolute disaster of a day at Wimbledon for one of tennis’ brightest stars.
Serena Williams has dominated Wimbledon’s courts for years now and was hoping to recapture some of that success this go-round for her first Grand Slam title since 2017.
But that has unfortunately been put on hold because of an injury.
After slipping on Wimbledon’s Centre Court Tuesday in the first round of the tournament, Williams was forced to retire from the match. She’d only played one set of her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich when she slipped and injured her ankle.
She continued play for a bit after slipping and even received treatment as the match went on before ultimately deciding to retire.
After her decision, she got up and waved a tearful goodbye to the audience. She received a standing ovation, but it was still so heartbreaking.

This is the worst. Hopefully, the injury isn’t too serious and she’s able to play again as soon as possible. Tennis just isn’t the same without her.
