Serco lock-changing eviction blitz to make 300 asylum seekers homeless in Glasgow

Hundreds of asylum seekers face eviction after a housing provider announced it is to restart a lock-changing programme.

Serco, which provides free accommodation to about 300 people in Glasgow, first announced last July that it was issuing notices to tenants who had been denied the right to remain in the UK.

In April, a legal challenge to the move was dismissed.

The company now plan to restart the programme.

Serco’s Julia Rogers said: “We very much regret the distress this will cause but we cannot be expected to provide free housing indefinitely to hundreds of people who have been unsuccessful in their asylum claims

“We call on all parties to work with us constructively to help people navigate their way through to a new future beyond the asylum system and we will be making funds available to charities to support this work.”

The programme will be rolled out over the next four months.

Almost all tenants involved are single. Serco said “no children will be left without housing”.

The firm will make up to £150,000 available to charities supporting homeless people in Glasgow.

City Council leader Susan Aitken blamed the UK Government for a move that would cause “mass destitution”.

In a letter to UK Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes, Aitken added: “It is an sorry and utterly unacceptable state of affairs when a UK Government contract legally obliges its contractor to force people from their homes.”

Scottish Government Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell also wrote to Nokes.

She said: “The conclusion of this sorry situation must not be that people are made destitute and homeless.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “We take the wellbeing of asylum seekers extremely seriously. We will continue to work closely with local authorities and partners to ensure those who have no right to be in the UK leave their accommodation in a safe and secure way.”

In January it was revealed that Serco had lost the Home Office contract in Scotland. Mears Group will take over after September.
