Serbia star makes Scotland fan plea ahead of Euro 2020 playoff final

Serbia star Nemanja Maksimovic has pleaded with President Aleksandar Vucic to let fans back for their Euro 2020 shoot-out with Scotland.

Steve Clarke’s side face the Serbs on November 12 for a place at next summer’s finals.

Scotland are underdogs for the one-off tie against Ljubisa Tumbakovic’s troops. But, at this moment, they won’t have to cope with a hostile home support.

The match is likely to go ahead at the 53,000 capacity Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade and UEFA guidelines that grant 30 per cent capacity mean up to 15,000 Serbs could be admitted if local rules allow.

Getafe star Maksimovic said: “I hope by then they will let the audience into the stadium and we will qualify for the much desired European Championship in front of our fans.”

Belgrade locals hoped fans would be readmitted next week for the Partizan and Red Star derby at the 30,000 capacity Partizan Stadium.

But Vucic said: “We decided not to let them go because (virus) numbers are rising.”

Meanwhile, Clarke has sent out an SOS to Andrew Considine, Ross McCrorie and Paul McGinn for the Nations League games with Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

All three were handed their first call-ups after Clarke lost six stars ahead of Thursday’s Euro play-off shootout win against Israel.

McGinn – who last night signed a contract extension at Hibs until 2022 – joins brother John in the Scotland camp for the first time.
