Sepp van den Berg joins Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp seals first summer signing

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of teenage defender Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle.

The Reds will pay an initial fee of €1.5million (£1.3m), though their outlay could rise by a further €3.5m in add-ons in the coming years.

Those extras are contingent on Van den Berg making as many as 350 league and European appearances at Anfield.

Should the 17-year-old achieve those landmarks then he will have delivered on the considerable promise that saw him chased by a number of clubs this summer.

Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven were two of the sides keenly pursuing the young Dutchman before he opted for a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool’s recruitment team have likened his potential to that of Joe Gomez, who has developed into a top-class central defender since a £3.5m move from Charlton in 2015.

Coincidentally, the pair share the same representation, a factor which may well have swung the chase for Van den Berg in the Reds’ favour.
