‘Sepoy got married under farmers’ flag in Feb’

PATIALA: Sepoy Gajjan Singh, 26, who was killed on Monday in a gunfight in Poonch sector in Kashmir, was on Wednesday cremated at his native village, Pachranda, Nurpur Bedi, of Ropar district with full military honours.

The family members of martyr Gajjan remained inconsolable. Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday paid glowing tributes to the martyr and shouldered his mortal remains, accompanied by Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker Rana K P Singh.

Channi, who laid wreath, and participated in the ardas, had also accompanied the martyr’s nephew and his father to lit the pyre of the braveheart, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, the CM said Gajjan Singh’s unprecedented sacrifice would inspire his fellow soldiers to perform their duties with utmost dedication and commitment to preserve the country’s sovereignty and integrity.

Gajjan got married in February this year and was the youngest among all his siblings. His family claimed Gajjan was recruited in the Army around nine years ago in 23 Sikh Regiment and was sent to Kashmir as part of 16 RR regiment from the past some time.

He performed his marriage rituals, carrying along the flag of farmer union while his family had remained part of the agitation against three farm laws.

He was survived by his wife Harpreet Kaur, father Charan Singh, mother Malkeet Kaur, three elder brothers including Harjap Singh, Amarjeet Singh and Kamaljit Singh, who all are farmers. Gajjan's family owned around 2.5 acres of agricultural land. On Tuesday, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha had also paid tributes to Gajjan Singh when it gathered inLakhimpur Kheri, UP, to pay homage to four famers.
