Sentimental items including jewellery box from the 1920s stolen from Sunderland home

An investigation is under way after sentimental jewellery was stolen from an elderly woman's house.

Shortly before 11pm on November 17, police were called to an address in Sunderland where it was reported that raiders had burgled a home.

The victim, an elderly lady, had been out of the home on Woodside in the Ashbrooke area when burglars forced entry to the property and stole a range of expensive items.

Among the items stolen included a gold box chain, a diamond and emerald ring and an old brass jewellery box from the 1920s.

Bank cards were also taken from the address, which were used at various locations in the Houghton-le-Spring and Hetton-le-Hole areas shortly after.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation is ongoing into the incident and police have now identified a man they would like to speak to in connection with their enquiries.

"He was in the same location as when one of the stolen cards was used and could have information that can assist detectives with their enquiries

"The man, or anyone who recognises him, is asked to call 101 quoting reference 1092 171119 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Alternatively, you can email  460@northumbria.pnn.police.uk ."
