'How responsible' man who stabbed neighbour to death was for his actions still unknown

Further mental health assessment is needed on a man has admitted killing a neighbour in Bristol, a judge has decided.

Bashir Abdullah died after being stabbed at a property in Easton in January.

The 32-year-old was discovered with serious injuries at a flat in Landsdowne Court at around 5.15pm on January 10 and later died.

A post-mortem examination confirmed he died as a result of being stabbed.

Following an investigation by Avon and Somerset Constabulary's Major Crime Investigation Team, Jamal Sheik-Mohammed, of Lansdowne Court, was charged with his murder.

Sheik-Mohammed, 52, previously appeared at Bristol Crown Court on June 25 and, though he denied murder, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

He was due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court today (September 12), but psychiatrists have said Sheik-Mohammed's responsibility for the killing is diminished, because of his mental state.

In a brief hearing today Anna Vigars QC, prosecuting, said three psychiatric doctors recommended further investigation of Sheik-Mohammed's mental health before a final sentence is considered.

The recommendation was reported by Andrew Langdon QC, defending, who said further investigation would assist the court.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC imposed an interim hospital order under Section 38 of the Mental Health Act to allow further investigation.

He told the court: "I have been provided with reports from doctors, psychiatrists, who have said Mr Sheik-Mohammed's responsibility for the killing is diminished because of his mental state.

"That mental state is still somewhat unclear as to whether it is treatable, or how responsible he was for his actions on the day that he killed his victim.

"Therefore I do need him to assessed further."

Sheik-Mohammed has been remanded under the care of Fromeside Hospital pending his next hearing at the crown court on December 5.
