Sensex rises 194 points to hit record closing of 53,055; Nifty ends at 15,880 for first time ever

NEW DELHI: Equity indices surged to record highs on Wednesday with the benchmark BSE sensex rising nearly 200 points, led by gains in metal and realty stocks.

The 30-share BSE index jumped 194 points or 0.37 per cent to close at fresh peak of 53,055; while the broader NSE Nifty settled 61 points or 0.39 per cent higher at record of 15,880.

Top gainers in the sensex pack included Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC, IndusInd Bank, Nestle India and Sun Pharma with their shares rising as much as 4.91 per cent.

Whereas Titan, Maruti, Reliance, Tech Mahindra and Ultra Cemco were the major losers falling up to 2.12 per cent.

On the NSE platform, sub-indices Nifty Metal, Realty and Financial Services gained up to 2.2 per cent.

"Markets seem to be indecisive and are seeking direction from stronger fundamentals... if a large company like Tata Motors comes out with a profit warning, it creates great panic among investors", Anita Gandhi, director at Arihant Capital Markets told news agency Reuters.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market as they offloaded shares worth Rs 543.30 crore on Tuesday, as per provisional exchange data.
