NEW DELHI: Equity indices jumped higher on Thursday with the benchmark BSE sensex rising over 750 points led by gains across sectors.
The 30-share BSE index surged 776 points or 1.35 per cent to close at 58,461. While the broader NSE Nifty settled 235 points or 1.37 per cent higher at 17,401.
Top gainers in the sensex pack included HDFC, PowerGrid, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech with their shares rising as much as 3.92 per cent.
While ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Ultra Cemco were the only losers falling up to 0.78 per cent.
On the NSE platform, all sub-indices finished in green with Nifty IT, Metal, Media and Oil & Gas gained as much as 2.06 per cent.
"Irrespective of the weak sentiments in the international markets, domestic indices continued to rise due to gains in IT, financials and metal stocks amid strong domestic macroeconomic data," Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services told news agency PTI.
Centre's fiscal deficit of 36.3 per cent of budget estimates in October, is better owing to improved revenue collection, he noted.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Wednesday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 2,765.84 crore, as per exchange data.
